Classes

CPI Class Overview

CPI offers classes to parents of children ages 0-18. Each class is led by a trained parent educator who provides tools that parents can adapt to their own family's needs. All CPI classes have a strong child development foundation, supporting the belief that each child and parent brings unique needs and temperament to family life. Although many classes are held at the Parent Education Center in southwest Santa Rosa, others are conveniently located throughout Sonoma County.

Classes include Guiding your Toddler and Preschooler, Positive Parenting.

Cost is per person unless otherwise indicated. Unless noted parents DO NOT attend with child. Childcare is not provided and children may not be left unattended. Classes are held at our Parent Education Center, 3642 Standish Ave, Santa Rosa, CA.

Respite, Sensory and Social Game Nights (ages 7-11)

Fridays | February 22, March 29, April 26 | 5:00-9:00pm

This is a respite night for parents. Children will participate in sensory and social game activities, hosted by Sonoma State University students taking a Psychology Class on Autism Spectrum Disorders taught by Dr. Jessica Hobson. Pizza and snacks will be provided.

Embracing Your Child with ADD/ADHD (Feb)

Parenting children with ADD/ADHD can be challenging and complex. But just as a child who struggles with reading can learn to decode words, children with ADD/ADHD can learn skills to become more confident, patient, social, organized and independent. This class will introduce key strategies to help parents build and strengthen connection with their child while establishing calm, clarity and positive communication.

Parenting Advanced Learners

Parenting “gifted” children can be wonderfully rewarding. It can also be challenging, frustrating and exhausting! This series of guided discussion groups will offer a forum for exchanging information about nurturing our sensitive, intense, creative, and insatiably curious children. Topics will include meeting social/emotional needs, peer relationships, perfectionism, motivation, underachievement, self-regulation, executive function skills, depression, twice exceptional children (gifted plus other issues), stress, idealism, existential angst, frustration tolerance, advocacy, imposter syndrome, and nurturing ourselves too! These classes will be based loosely upon the national SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) parent group model. Please join us for good company, support, and lively discussion.

Thanks to a generous donation from the California Association for the Gifted’s Political Action Committee, everyone who registers for this class, which usually costs $120, will automatically receive a half-price scholarship and pay $60. Mindfulness Program for Parents and Children (ages 10+)

Thursdays | February 7 – March 14 | 6:30-8:00pm

Teaching parents and children how to use mindfulness to ease stress and manage difficult emotions. The class is intended for parents and children (ages 4-18). The practice taught during these sessions have been proven to decrease anxiety in students. They become calmer and more focused and have reported experiencing less stress regarding homework and test. Students have also reported becoming less emotionally reactive and more compassionate with themselves as well as others.

Parenting and Coping with Stress (Feb)

Join other parents in a group session, focused on helping parents develop appropriate coping skills while managing events in their lives that cause tension and impact how they may be parenting their children. Each parent will develop their specific individual strategy to assist them in coping and challenging unhelpful thoughts.

Parenting Teens Series

You might be wondering what happened to the child you used to enjoy so much. Perhaps he or she has always been a challenge and is now an even "tougher" teen. Parenting teens can feel like navigating a sailboat across an ocean. In this three-night series parents will learn strategies to stay on course during the adolescent years.

Topics addressed: Teen brain development, causes of behavior problems, promoting a positive relationship, coping with teens' emotions, planning for risky behavior and self-care tips for teens and parents.

Raising a Child with an Ex-Partner (Feb)

This one-evening workshop helps separating and divorcing parents address the challenge of raising children in two households. Learn how to manage a new, co-parenting relationship in ways that reduce conflict and protect children. The workshop offer strategies that can produce greater cooperation between parenting partners.

Handling Anger, Mine and My Child's (Feb)
