Autism Support

Mindful Self-Compassion Class for Parents & Sensory-Social Group for Children (ages 7-11)

6 sessions

Mondays / March 26 - April 30, 2018 / 5:30-6:30pm

CPI 3642 Standish Ave, Santa Rosa, CA

This class series is designed to help parents of school age (8 – 11 year-old) children with autism draw upon self-compassion to decrease stress and negative emotions while enhancing emotional balance. Self-compassion involves becoming mindfully aware of negative thoughts and emotions and learning to nurture, soothe, and care for oneself in times of difficulty. This class will help parents develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and increase connection with their children. The parent classes will be co-facilitated by faculty from Sonoma State University: licensed clinical psychologist and autism expert Dr. Jessica Hobson (Lecturer, Psychology Department) and meditation teacher Professor Andy Wallace (Chair of Philosophy Department).

During the hour-long parenting classes, school age children with autism spectrum disorder will participate in a sensory social play group designed to support the children with peer interaction through cooperative games and self-regulation through sensory play. The sensory social play groups will be led by students from Sonoma State University taking the Psychology Department Course entitled Autism: Theory and Intervention taught by Dr. Jessica Hobson (who will provide support and supervision to the SSU students).
