Together we can make every child safe, every community aware.
We believe that every child has a right to a safe childhood free of violence. We are taking a stand to make that a reality, and we invite you this April - Child Abuse Prevention Month - to stand with us.
In 1989, the Blue Ribbon Campaign to Prevent Child Abuse began as a Virginia grandmother’s tribute to her grandson who died as a result of abuse.
As part of this campaign, our local council, Prevent Child Abuse Sonoma County, hosts a series of free parenting classes and awareness events throughout the month to recognize the importance of Child Abuse Prevention. Although April is Child Abuse Prevention month, every day of every month should be dedicated to stopping child abuse.
In 2017, there were 7,429 reports of child abuse and neglect made to Family, Youth and Children’s Services in Sonoma County. Of these, 1,914 reports were serious enough to require a face-to-face investigation to determine if abuse was actually occurring. Of the children removed from unsafe homes, 238 entered foster care.
The ripple effect of child abuse throughout our community is substantial and profound. Child abuse not only contributes to homelessness and high incarceration rates, it affects our schools and our healthcare system. Not to mention the financial implication. In just one year, child abuse will end up costing the Sonoma County community millions of dollars. Yes, millions — dollars that could be better put towards early childhood education, infrastructure, or affordable housing.
Our community deserves better. Our children deserve better.

His subsequent forgiveness work has reached millions through international speaking, public and corporate workshops, school forums, purposeful visits to prisons, video and audio recordings and four published books, including the award-winning From Murder to Forgiveness and the Random House book The Secrets of the Bulletproof Spirit, coauthored with Jillian Quinn.
